Refurbishment and extension of the Reial Monestir de Santa Isabel School
The intervention, carried out in three stages, created a modern school equipment with a floor area of more than 16,000m2 equipped with exemplary sports facilities

The Reial Monestir de Santa Isabel School is located in the Barcelona neighborhood of Sarrià, in a place that has undergone a major urban transformation as a result of the dismantling of the adjacent garages of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (catalan railways). In this context, the project wanted to restore and expand the existing campus, in order to implement new facilities. The final school wanted to have 2 lines (2 classes of each) for pre-school education, primary and secondary education, high school, a sports center and a priest’s residence.
In order to make school-life and the construction works coexist, they were done in three stages. The first one, which was the one for the extension, represented the construction of the sports complex (sports center and swimming pool), the parking lot, the pre-school education premises and part of the primary, secondary and high schools. At the same time, works for the construction of a social and administrative center and an auditorium for 160 people were carried out. The second stage included the comprehensive rehabilitation of the existing school building. The third and last stage comprised the restoration of the church, the cloisters and the chapter house, all of them listed elements in the Architectural Historic Artistic Heritage Catalog of the city of Barcelona.
Previously, to the construction works PB2 was also responsible of the special urban plan modification of the plot in which general guidelines for the intervention were set.
